The Education & Mentoring department volunteers with schools in the local San José area while discussing greater systemic education inequalities. The following are volunteer times and information for the Winter 2023 Quarter:

Hughes Elementary Tutoring
Program Coordinator: Chloe Lin (YLIN7@SCU.EDU) 

Partnering with Hughes Elementary, SCU students will get the opportunity to give their time to after-school tutoring for Hughes Elementary students, and engage in a knowledge-sharing experience, contributing their time and knowledge as tutors for kids who might otherwise struggle to secure tutoring services.

Times: (Requires a quarter long commitment)
Tuesdays: 1:50pm-3:30pm
​Wednesdays: 12:50pm-3:30pm


Note: Requires volunteer packet completion prior to volunteering

Intro to Coding x Buchser
Program COordinator: Bryan maruyama (bmaruyama@scu.edu)

SCCAP's E&M department has been asked to help with the re-instating of an intro-level coding program for students at Buchser middle school. The program will employ the use of the Raspberry Pie Coding program and will be an opportunity to involve STEM and CS majors specifically in our volunteer work.

Times: (Requires a quarter long commitment and specific to those with coding knowledge)
Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays: 12:50pm-2pm

ESL on Campus
PROGRAM COORDINATOR: Veronica Flores (vflores@SCU.EDU) 

covid relief activities x scusd

The goal of this program is to give back to our community of hard-working on-campus Benson workers by offering them participation in student-led English mentoring sessions. This program also aims to connect students to other passionate, and driven peers and gives students the ability to gain leadership skills or utilize their language skills for good.

Times: (Spanish Language skills preferred)
Saturdays: 10:00am-11:00am
A broader initiative with various SCUSD schools that have high post-pandemic needs such as traffic control helpers, classroom helpers etc. Different volunteer activities will likely be differing levels of commitment. 
​

Times: (Spanish Language skills preferred)
1) Morning and Afternoon drop-off and Pick-up Safety (3 people per shift) (School Principal Authorizes)
(Training on-site and at least 1 month commitment Monday - Friday)
- Afternoon shift 2:10 - 2:40 but Wed from 1:30 - 2 p.m.
2) Lunchtime yard duty (up to 5 per day) for all elementary schools
- Training on-site and at least 1 month commitment Monday - Friday
Lunchtime - 11:30-1pm (Slots for all days available)
After school- Wednesdays- 1:20-5pm (good day for volunteers)

Hi! I am Karina and I am a Junior majoring in Anthropology and Sociology. I grew up in Hong Kong but I love traveling and learning about new places and meeting new people! Some other things I enjoy are spending time outdoors, watching movies and cooking when I can! I am so glad to be a part of SCCAP again, and am excited see SCCAP's presence and influence on and off campus re-grow!

Hi! My name is Sarah Neus, and I'm a first-year English major. I grew up in 6 different countries, but my most recent home is St. Joseph, MI! In my free time, I love going outside, baking, playing with my dog, and listening to Harry Styles music. ​I'm excited to get more involved with the Bay Area community as a newcomer to California, and I'm looking forward to working with so many amazing people!

I'm also involved in other orgs on campus such as SHPE, APO, and TLC! ​I am excited to be part of SCCAP this year so that I can interact more with the community around Santa Clara University as well as be apart of a group that is passionate about social justice!

I enjoy reading, watching shows/movies with friends, and video games! ​I'm excited to be in SCCAP because I think it's important for our school to be aware of and involved in prevalent social justice issues!
